Dominique Gorley's "I Gotchu" expresses the value of small social circles.
"I wrote it a few years ago when I was going through a hard period. You can really determine who your real friends are when you are going through tough times," Gorley said.
The 30 year-old singer-songwriter said her music is inspired by artists like Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, H.E.R, Mariah Carey, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Missy Elliot, UGK and Billie Holiday.
Although the Ottowa-based singer describes her music to be "a fusion of RnB and soul with a touch of jazz", she said "I Gotchu" is meant to deliver an old-school vibe.
"To me, the 90’s sound will never get old," she said.
Prior to this release, Gorley wrote two albums in 2015.
However, she said they were both poorly promoted and as a result, were removed from online.
"I am in the process of re-releasing my favourite songs from each album on all major platforms. We learn through our mistakes. It’s only up from here," she said.
This year, Gorley is collaborating with Sean Duhmaine, an Ottawa-based guitarist, on an EP called "Fearless". The EP is expected to be released in Fall 2020.
Moreover, Gorley is participating in Canada's largest singer-songwriter competition, "Sing for the Shot: Remastered".
The competition is meant to show Canadian independent singer-songwriters what it's like to audition for a record label, according to its website.
Past contestants succeeded in reaching 800,000 streams on Spotify and performing at Boots and Hearts, NXNE and Ottawa Bluesfest. Some also opened for Jim Cuddy, Tyler Shaw, Buffy Saint-Marie, Our Lady Peace and made broadcast appearances on season 2 of CTV’s The Launch.
"I made it to round 2 and will know mid-July if I make it to the next round," she said. "This experience is teaching me the business side of the industry as well as shaping me to be the best version of myself and as an artist."
