Vince Barrese blends folk, pop and indie in his groovy new song "I Wanna Be Your Guy" [Premiere]

"I Wanna Be Your Guy is kind of ambiguous in terms of genre, and I kind of like it. That being said, I feel like it belongs to more of the indie scene than the folk one," Barrese said.

The Ontario-born singer songwriter was lyrically inspired by a crush but musically inspired by Billy Raffoul's "Coffee".

"I was listening to a lot of Billy Raffoul’s music at the time. He has a way of making only a couple instruments fill a whole song, which I really admire," he said.

Produced by Barrese himself in his own basement, the song was written during what he described as a "creative period", where he writes 20 to 30 songs in 2-3 weeks.

"I wrote the chorus first, and it immediately sounded like nothing I had ever written before. There was a unique groove in the lyrics that quickly made me realize that it was special," Barrese said.

Barrese's love for music began at a young age.

"My parents always talk about how I used to stand beside the radio for hours just daydreaming," he said.

However, his first major industry-break was his participation in season 5 of YTV's talent competition The Next Star.

"I was part of the top 12. I remember that was a really big moment for me. I didn’t make it to the top 6, and as a result, I was crushed. Soon after though, I began taking my artistry more seriously, and a few days after the rejection, I began writing my own songs," he said.

Barrese has been performing around Toronto and the Greater-Toronto-Area at open mics and gigs and has consistently released singles and EPs since 2016.

One of Barrese's songs "Get to Know You" has been streamed over 18,000 times on Spotify.

"I’ve been blessed to be able to build a very small but loyal following on Spotify, thanks to Spotify curated playlists," he said.

Although he said he was previously against record deals, his long term goal has now become signing one.

"In the next year I don’t expect that to happen, but I definitely think that building a following on something like Spotify for example, helps," he said.

In the meantime, Barrese said he will be participating in Canada's singer-songwriter competition The Shot.
